SVA Failure report

Test taken at Edmonton 17 July 2001

Although the results below look horrendous, having read through them several times I realise that to put the faults right is not a major problem.  The tester was very fair and positive explaining why the various points had not met the required standard and gave me a good idea of what he required to be done.  (Not sure how fair he was after other builders experiences at Derby and Birmingham). The worst job to do is solving the seat belt problem.  I have used inertia belts and it is impossible to fit them in a way that will satisfy the requirements.  If I move the top mount, the reel will be at an angle to it.  There is no where to re-position the reel as the suspension mounting is in the way.  The only cure for this is to fit harnesses. UPDATE:  Having discussed this with other Locosters on the Yahoo groups list I have decided to use the Inertia reels and mount them in the centre at the back.  This means the shoulder strap will come over the left shoulder of the driver and the right shoulder of the passenger.  It does mean I will have to brace the roll bar which I intend to do at the front down to the transmission tunnel.

Lighting

Solutions

Rear fog lamp not E marked and not 150 candles not fitted in a vertical position

New e marked fog lamp fitted

Offside dip beam not working

Connector problem on back of sealed beam unit.  Terminals of sealed beam modified to be a tight fit.

Front indicators more than 400mm inboard

Modified bar by lengthening.

Speedo

Speedo reads less than true speed of vehicle

Adjusted so that it reads slightly above true speed.  Done by moving the hairspring adjuster.  Calibration guesstimated using a Dremmel.

Seatbelts

Seat belt lap section not over pelvic area

Moved lower inner seatbelt mount back to be in line with outer mount.

Seat belt upper anchorage less than 140mm from centre line of seat

Centre mounted inertia reels.  Top mounts central on rollbar.

Top seat belt anchorage not sufficient strength as rollbar not braced

Rollbar braced at front to transmission tunnel.  Transmission tunnel strengthened.

Interior projection contactable with 165mm sphere has a radius of curvature less then 2.5mm

Keyswitch under N/S dash (Immobiliser)

Keyswitch moved to driver side under dash.  Underside of dash covered in.

Chassis rail at foot wells

Pipe lagging glued onto rail.

Lower dash edge not radiused to 19mm

As underside of dash is now boxed in the problem is gone.

Gear lever contactable edge not radiused

Moved gear lever gaiter up higher on gearstick.
Mirrors

Exterior mirrors do not give required field of view

Brackets made to raise mirrors by 7"

Hard feature or projections contactable with 110mm sphere has a radius curvature of less than 2.5mm

a) Top of front suspension spring

Pipe lagging.

a) Top of front suspension mount

Pipe lagging.

b) Chassis in front of suspension

Pipe lagging.

c) Headlamp bracket (ends of mounting bar)

Plastic caps fitted.

d) Front indicators (edges where the fixing screws fit)

Silicon sealant to fill the slots.

e) Repeaters (edges where the fixing screws fit

Silicon sealant to fill the slots.

f) Front grille requires edges removing

Radiused with a file.

g)  Air cleaner edges (edges of chrome cover)

Split windscreen washer tubing fitted.

h)  Fuel cap

Plastic cover made from a Kenco coffee jar.

Wiring incorrectly clipped, not insulated, exposed to heat or likely to chafe or short circuit:

a) Under dash

Dash boxed in.  Problem gone.

b) Under master cylinder, clipped to brake pipe

Tyrap cut off.

c) Starter motor cable needs clipping and protection

Rubber fuel hose split and tyrapped on.  Clipped to chassis rail

Other

Carb/distributor needs shield to protect from fuel spillage

Plate fitted between carb and distributor.

Clutch cable angle (possibility of rapid wear/breakage.

Lock nut fitted to cable pulling the cable horizontal.
